The Tale of Boudreaux
Character Designs for a Short Film Concept.
"The Tale of Boudreaux" is a short film concept centered on Boudreaux, an eternal singleton in the town of D'Amore. With a population of just 101, D'Amore annually hosts a matchmaking event where every pair finds their match and enters the mythical "Tunnel of Love," leaving town forever. The one individual left out must wait another year. For five agonizing years, Boudreaux has been that person.
Recognizing his perennial misfortune, the town's matchmaker arranges three special dates for Boudreaux. However, these dates are more than just a chance for romance; they become a crucible exposing Boudreaux's deeply ingrained, misogynistic views. Throughout these disastrous encounters, Boudreaux doesn't present his authentic self. Instead, he constantly performs a version of masculinity dictated by the male gaze and relies on toxic dating advice absorbed from other men. He fails to genuinely listen or connect, treating the women as objects to be won rather than individuals to be understood.
The film's turning point arrives as Boudreaux experiences the abject failure of these performances. He grapples with the realization that his problem was never bad luck or external circumstances, but his own warped perspectives and lack of basic decency. The true path to "getting further"—whether that means finding a match or simply achieving self-respect—hinges entirely on shedding his inauthentic, harmful persona and embracing genuine human interaction.
Visually, "The Tale of Boudreaux" will be brought to life with characters and the world constructed from found objects. This unique artistic choice subtly underscores the film's themes, symbolizing the dehumanizing lens through which Boudreaux initially perceives others. The one exception is Boudreaux, who appears as a handpuppet, merely repeating the words of others that aren't his own. The aim is to create a compelling, visually distinctive commentary on self-delusion and the crucial journey toward emotional and intellectual honesty.
